Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), is a talking psychotherapy involving practical techniques and interventions. CBT is based on the principle that we experience mental health problems including stress, anxiety and depression because of a change in our thoughts, emotions or behaviours. Through working together with your therapist, you can identify and change these symptoms and improve your mental wellbeing.
CBT is a recommended treatment for depression and all anxiety disorders including panic, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and health anxiety.
Additionally, CBT can support sleep problems, and the psychological effects of long term health conditions, such as diabetes, chronic fatigue and COPD.
How it works
- During your assessment appointment, your therapist will work with you to explore what has been maintaining your problem.
- From here, we will be able to formulate the best interventions that can be used to treat your symptoms.
- The formulation will also help us to look at the key areas we will address in therapy.
- Techniques introduced will include a combination of behavioural and cognitive methods.
